    What are inter-library loans for?

The purpose of inter-library loans is to make documents not held in Eötvös Károly County Library available to library users. The following rules apply to registered readers of Eötvös Károly County Library (hereinafter: EKMK), but the service is available in practically all libraries in Hungary.

Who can take advantage of this opportunity?

The service is available to any reader with a valid library membership who agrees to abide by inter-library loan rules. The latter is also important because in inter-library loans, the lending library does not lend to individuals but to EKMK, so a reader who breaks the rules may jeopardise not only his/her own interests but also those of his/her fellow library users.

    What can be requested?

According to the location of the document

If someone needs a particular document, the first step is to make sure that it is not in EKMK's holdings.

Please check the document in our online catalogue before submitting an inter-library loan request.

As regards the nature of the documents, practically everything can be requested, but it is up to the lending library to decide whether to fulfil the request in the form of originals, photocopies or electronic copies.

In certain cases (e.g. charters, museum material), copies may be refused.

    What cannot be requested?

Old, rare publications may not be loaned by libraries, in which case they will usually offer to make a copy.

Libraries do not lend periodicals, so only copies of articles can be requested.

Local use and reference collections of libraries do not form a part of inter-library loans.

Hungarian libraries will not lend manuscripts, dissertations or theses, and copies of the entire document or parts of it may not be requested.

It may not be possible to borrow frequently used educational materials (textbooks published in a low number of copies, language books, audio cassettes, CD-ROMs).

Documents from the holdings of the National Széchényi Library - with the exception of the loan collection of the Centre for Library and Information Science - cannot be borrowed from the library; they can only be used on the spot.

Libraries may refuse to fulfil an inter-library loan request.

How can I use the inter-library loan service?

Requests can be made in person, by e-mail, by phone, or by filling in an online request form, for which the reader must have a valid library membership.

After logging in, you can choose to submit an inter-library request for the original format (book) or for a copy (article/part of book). The request form should include all available information about the requested work to facilitate identification of the document.

If the requested document can be found in Hungary, the request will be forwarded to the specific site once the location has been established.

If the requested material is not available in Hungary, the requested work will be obtained from abroad, if the reader requests it. The foreign lending is mostly done through the National Széchényi Library (hereinafter: OSZK), in case of copies through the National Technical Information Centre and Library of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (hereinafter: BME-OMIKK).

A service within the framework of inter-library loans is the site request service, which has no financial implications and is only used to identify possible site(s) in Hungary.

    Duration of inter-library loans

    Delivery time

From home loan, the requested document arrives in about 3-5 days; the article/copy is available after a few days.

The average time between submitting and receiving a request from abroad is 1-3 months for books and 1-6 weeks for copies.

In view of the above, readers are reminded not to disregard the time factor when working to a deadline.

    Loan period

The deadline is set by the lending library. It is usually 3-4 weeks, but the book may only be available for a few days.

Acceptance of the deadline is an essential condition for access to inter-library loans.

    Extension

An extension can usually be requested twice, but in all cases it is up to the lending library to grant it and, if so, for how many days.

Any request for an extension must be made before the deadline.

    How much does it cost?

    Original document (book):

from within Hungary: approx. HUF 1,000-1,500 Ft per book, depending on the weight of the book.

From abroad: HUF 4,500 Ft per book, but the lending library abroad may charge more. In the latter case, the cost will be agreed separately with the requestor.

    Copies

Copies may only be made in compliance with the legislation in force. The cost of making copies is set by the sending library.

    How to pay

The inter-library service fee can be paid in cash on the 2nd floor and on the ground floor.

If possible, the reader will be notified of the arrival of the requested item on the same day.

    Cancelling a request

An inter-library request can be cancelled free of charge as long as the library providing the service has not fulfilled the request, i.e. the original document has not yet been sent or a copy has not yet been made.

Payment is still due if the reader no longer needs the book or copy but the request has been fulfilled by the sending library or the reader has not indicated his/her intention to cancel.

    Damaged or lost books

The reader is responsible for the documents he/she uses and, in the event of loss or damage, is obliged to replace them or pay compensation for the damage caused, at the discretion of the lending library. In such cases the rules of the lending library will be applied.
